Let us Spray - Police Cop an arresting Taste

(Photograph of Policeman kneeling with head in a bucket of water)

Caption: This bucket of water was a sight for sore eyes for Constable John
Burton yesterday after he had a taste of pepper spray. Twenty police
officers from Wellington volunteered for an eyeful of the potent oleoresin
capsicum spray, which one said felt as if "someone has put a hot poker in
your eye." The spray, which was tested in Cristchurch last year, will soon
become a frontline tool against violent offenders. Within seconds of being
hit with a stream of the spray, extracted from cayenne pepper, many of the
officers were on their knees sticking their heads into buckets of water.
The effects wear off in about half an hour.
