Hi Paul,

I would say your pepper yields sound about right for first year plants.  I
find hot bananas and jalapenos grow very well in England too.  I believe
you can also get varieties that are specially for colder climates, such as
early Jalapeno etc.

Have you considered overwintering your plants?  It really gives them a
flying headstart the following spring.
  
My favourite pepper is the scotch bonnet, of which I have several that
have overwintered from last year.Unfortunately they are looking a wee bit 
miserable in that some of the leaves have crispy  brown bits on them and
all of them have lost that nice "shiny" look they used to have.  

I'd be very grateful if anyone has any ideas?
