Not for certain, I can only hypothesize (and that can sometimes lead to
lively, informative discussions). I would think that the first fruit are
set before the plant becomes fully fruit-stressed and are a bit more viable
as a result. I know there are CHers here with many more years growing
experience than I who might have something more definitive.
