Drowning's definitely not a painless or immediate way to die, though,
and the sheer body-panic is horrible and indescribable.  I almost
drowned once...was maybe ten seconds from dead when they pulled me
out, and blind and deaf for awhile after I became conscious again...
and wouldn't want to repeat the experience.
