Here's an option no one has seem to mention.

When I was a kid, I spent my summers on my uncles farm.
My cousin and I were paid the equivalent of 1 box of 22 cal ammo 
to shoot groundhogs in neighboring farmers fields
for each one we brought in.
(It's better to shoot a groundhog than a cow or horse with a broken leg)
We also gave the dead ones to a family that would eat them

1ea.  22 cal. hollow point round between the eyes/ears of a squrriel is
instantaneous death.

This is an option, yours to use or throw out. The final choice is yours
