Depends on the size (or expected size) of the mature plants.  I try to keep
at least 24" between rows and between plants, but my garden is small and
sometimes I "bunch" plants.

Last season, I planted my savinas 24" apart in their row, but they grew
together like a hedge - they were so thick and bushy I couldn't believe it.
