Hi C-H's,

Mr Bailes asked:
>Subject: [CH] Would Alcohol preserve vitamin C in Chilli?

Vit. C (ascorbic acid) is reasonably stable in air when the compound is dry
but darkens gradually on exposure to light. Water solutions are oxidized
rapidly by air, especially in the presence of alkali, copper, or iron. One
gram dissolves in about 3 ml of water, 30 ml of alcohol, or 100 ml of
glycerol. Insoluble in benzene or ether. I have no information on chemical
reactions in (ethyl) alcohol

>Opps what is this?

Simply a soil or soil-less medium for starting seeds. Nearly all are
sterilised to remove bacteria and fungii which might harm the plants or
seeds. Check the package for details.

                     Regards, Cameron.
