If the current vindaloo thread is inspiring any chileheads to seek out a
vindaloo of authentic South Indian strength at an Indian eatery, it may help
to impress your waiter with the correct pronunciation. I am sure that 99%
of english speakers would pronounce it VIN'-duh-loo, with the accent on the
first syllable, the second syllable being the least pronounced, and a bit of
emphasis on the 'loo'. (emphasis on the loo? relax, you brits - that is not
till *after* the vindaloo is consumed! =8^) This is how I pronounced it
myself for many years (and how Joey Ramone pronounces it for those of you
familiar with The Ramones' music.) Someone born in India, would pronounce it
with the accent entirely on the second syllable: vin-DAH'-loo. The 'oo'
suffix is used often in Indian nouns, I am told, and in the english
language we derive the word 'shampoo' from India.
