After lurking for almost two years I find it time to join in the
festivities! This is prompted by my new arrivals-this year's crop of
Jalapeno, Serrano, New Mex, Rocoto, Orange Hab, and Red Savina seedlings.
Again this year my seedlings have all sprouted within 5 - 8 days of
sowing. I'm sure you all have your favorite "tried and true" methods of
germination but I though I'd share mine, just in case your methods are not
producing such "dramatic" results.
I simply put a "shop light" with a 60 wt. bulb under an upside down
corregated cardboard box (dimensions approx. : 14- 16" square and approx.
12" deep). Take care that the bulb is not close to any combustible
materials, cover the box with plastic, (I used an old plasic bag), plant 3
seeds in each section of nursery-type 3-packs, spray with water to
moisten, and cover the 3-packs with plastic wrap. Check seedlings daily
and uncover IMMEDIATELY upon sprouting. Place under 2 40 wt. flourescent
lights and your on your way!
Last year was an incredible year in Ohio for gardening - I picked my first
Red Savina on July 9th !
Good luck, good growing and happy chile picking!
