Here I go again...

I suppose if there is a "don't miss" in SA, it's Los Barrios, IHMO:
my favorite Tex-Mex in the world. A small chain called Sea Island on
the northwest side has pretty good seafood for the area.

Most of the stuff along the Riverwalk is geared more toward
entertaining the college kids with daddy's gold card (loud and liquid)
than dining, but I've had good food at Dick's Last Resort. If
possible, do the Riverwalk on a weekday in the late afternoon, unless
you like crowds and noise.

Then there's Rudy's in Leon Springs for BBQ (new location near Sea
World), Little Red Barn for steak, Grady's in Leon Valley for catfish,
and Chris Madrid's for big greasy burgers.

If you want a nice drive into the country, try El Chapparal in
Helotes, primarily Tex-Mex but a little of everything. For
"authentic" Mexican, I'm told La Fogata and Ernesto's are the places
to go.

These are just the opinions of a long-time local. Good luck, write me
off list if you want more info...

BTW, it sounds from your post you'll be coming here during Fiesta
week...all bets are off! EVERYTHING will be wall-to-wall people. A
couple of food-related things I've enjoyed in the past: The Fiesta
Oyster Bake at St. Mary's University, and A Taste of New Orleans at
The Sunken Gardens. Let your conscience be your guide!
