There is a sauce that is Georgian in origin called Tkemali sauce. I did a
perfunctory scan through my most likely cookbooks to see if I could find a
recipe, and although I know I have one lurking around here somewhere, it
hasn't popped out of hiding yet. I think one of the ingredients is a kind
of sour plum that isn't readily available Stateside.

BTW, if you go back to the Russian deli and see some red stuff in a jar
labeled Hot Ajvar, check it out. It's from the Balkan area, and is composed
of eggplant, garlic, and hottish red peppers. IMNSHO, it's pretty tasty,
though not overpoweringly frighteningly hot.
