Hi all,
At last, a shop devoted to all things chile in the Johannesburg area! On
Saturday, my husband and I checked out a new chile shop we'd heard about.
It's just as I had imagined the sauce shops in the States must be - full of
wonderful treats - sauces, pickles, posters, books, dried chiles, seeds
etc. It's a must for any serious chile-head in the Gauteng region. It's in
the Village Walk centre in Sandton and we had a ball tasting sauces and
spending way too much money! Considering our lousy exchange rate, the
prices aren't bad - average R25 for a bottle of imported sauce with the
locally made sauces ranging from +/- R5.
I bought Scorned Woman (which has a fairly respectable heat level I might
add!), Iguana Gold and a Raspberry Chipotle basting sauce (the name escapes
me at the moment). He also had Blairs Death sauce (which I tasted and found
to be relatively mild considering what I'd read on the list) and a bunch of
other American sauces and a lot of locally produced sauces - all the usual
ones like Pouyoukas, Banditos, Nali and so on and quite a few of which I
had never come across before. He usually stocks Dave's Insanity but had run
out. There must be close to 100 different types of sauce available. We met
a fellow called Greg who was very friendly and delighted to have a customer
who was willing to taste anything that he produced!
The place is called "The Chilli Factor" and the phone number is
011-4634971.
No affiliations - Just a very impressed customer.
