I simply stem and seeded the jalapenos, and placed them on the top rack of
my smoker.  I smoked them for about 6 hours with lump charcoal and hickory
chunks (I suppose I should use mesquite).  I then stoked it one more time
with charcoal and let it burn itself out overnight.  The next day I had
beautiful, dark brown wrinkled stiff, but not brittle chipotles.
