In trucking, Bone dry loam is figured at 1 ton per cubic yd.

1 cu yd spread 3" thick covers 12 sq yd
(36 in = 1 yd: 3 into 36 = 12: correct)

12 into 4840 to 3 sig. digits is 403 tons
x 2000 = 806,000 lbs

add average 20% moisture (around here)

For the home gardener with a wheelbarrow and a shovel what is the
significant difference?
