First thing that springs to my mind would be a little old fashioned draining
through cheese-cloth.
Other thickeners could be pureed beans, potatoes anything thick and starchy
really.
I'd test the arrowroot, corn starch approach.  Their thickening powers seem
to deteriorate within a rather short period of time.
