Earlier this year I had rabbit problems in my yard. I discovered
that the cute little things loved, not only my vegetable plants I had
hardening off, but the grapes, blueberries, hollyhocks and dogwoods I just
planted. Then to my horror they took a liking to my pepper plants! Well I
ran around in a Elmer Fud like manner chasing them away, and caging
everything, until I finally got the fence guy I hired to get the fence up.
The fence was primarily to keep my (3) year old from terrorizing the
neighborhood on his Power Wheels but it has been pretty effective in keeping
the rabbits out. But then I found my the leaves on my Datils and Red Savinas
chewed to the stems. It drove me nuts. After reading some of the posts on
the lists about the squirrels I started watching the buggers as they came in
the yard to eat the sunflower seeds in the bird feeder. On the way past the
garden they'd stop and munch a bit of pepper plant. Some one suggested
Squirrel Away, which ironically is part hot pepper powder. I guess I'll cage
the peppers they like and let my dog loose more often. He'll probably turn
out to love my Jalapenos though. Oh well I guess you learn something every
day. Other than that the garden is doing great.
And as far as watering during the day what are you supposed to do
when it rains? I've been running out and drying off my plants.
