The chile you are talking about is Phrik khee nu or Bird Chile which is my 
very favorite one.  Yes, it is very hot and wonderful. It doesn't have the 
metallic after taste of the Phrik chee fa - Thai Dragon which can also be 
found in Thai grocery stores as a pickled chile -Phrik daeng dong-no kidding 
that is the name honest!   The Thai Dragon is quite nice as well but not 
nearly as hot.

Yes, Phrik is the Thai word for chiles.
