The "bright blue stinger" isn't a stinger, it is just a horn.  This big
caterpillar is what turns into the Hawk Moth which you can see pollinating
flowers in the evenings.  It kind of resembles a hummingbird. (I am
thinking this is the same caterpillar which enjoys tomato foliage.)
