I bought a top-of-the-line blender. I always make my curries starting
from the fresh whole spices and roast and grind them myself (and often
do the same with my chiles), so to save large unpleasant callouses on my
hands from the mortar and pestle I got the sort of blender made to crush
ice. It has, in addition to the usual two up-angled blades, one sitting
horizontal, and another pointing down at 45'.

Ascii illustration:

\_/__ <-- 3 blades here, one horizontal, two normal
           / | <-- fourth, 45' angle blade on left
              |

This wasn't cheap by any means, but it will pulverise even the smallest
amount of spice into the finest powder, as it picks everything up and
throws it the air for more effective cutting. I use it for making
everything from spices to curry pastes to marinades. I even used it to
crush ice, once!
