I think part of what keeps the myth alive is that people who
only know the myth take a pepper, cut out the seeds, find the
heat lowered so the myth is reinforced. What they fail to notice
is that they cut out most of the membrane when they removed
the seeds, thus attributing the diminished heat to the wrong
missing bits.
