Oops, sorry, I should have explained that one. It's the leaf of the
pandanus tree, or screwpine. With the spines removed, of course. One
strip would be about 2-5" long (note exact measurements ;-) ). It is one
of the characteristic flavours of Sri Lankan food.
It can often be bought dried or frozen from Indian grocery stores, or
can be substituted by Kewra essence os pasta pandan essence (both also
from the pandanus). It can also be omitted if you can't find any.
