Researchers find hot chilies are for the birds

Two researchers working with a Tucson organization have found that
chilies are hot because they're for the birds. The research shows that
wild chilies use a chemical designed to drive off seed-eating mammals
without bothering birds, which help the chilies germinate. The results
of their study appear in today's issue of Nature magazine.
