Got this note from the secretary of the Illinois Chilli Society --
Joe DeFrates was the only winner of both the C.A.S.I. and I.C.S.
championships. He was a life member of the Board of Director of the
International Chili Society and founder of Chilli Man Chilli, one of the
premier canned chilli brands in the world. His chilli spice blend has
won a number of chilli cook-offs outright and more as the basis of
custom blends. Truly a giant in the chile and spice world. He also took
chilli across the ocean on State Department trips. Joe was also the
subject of at least one book authored by Christine Toney two years ago.
Not to mention that he was a really neat guy. And I'm gonna miss him a
lot.
All of this centers in the heart of the Great American Outback,
Springfield, IL
It is with deep sorrow and sincere regret that I have the task of
informing
you of the death of our beloved friend and mentor, Joe DeFrates.
According to his good friend George Staab, he passed away about 4 A.M.
on
Sunday, August 19th. We do not know the cause but it appears that he
died
in his sleep.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 P.M. on Tuesday, August 21st. Services
will
be at 11 A.M., Wednesday at St Agnes church.
