RE: [CH] UK chile heads?

Up here in Scotland (summer? what summer?) I've managed to grow jalapenos
quite successfully in my solar-shed in the past (fancy name just for a hut
with a glass wall!). This year I'm trying Habs, Jalapenos and New Mexican.
However we've had a pretty dull summer, and so far I've had plenty of
flowers but no fruit as yet...the flowerheads just end up dying and falling
off. I've sorta successfully grown a couple of tomatillo plants in my
lean-to greenhouse tho'.

Whilst we're on the subject of UK Chileheads, does anyone know where in the
UK I can get stuffed jalapenos from? I used to be able to get them from
Sainsbury's (Anchor Foods Jalapeno Poppers) but they don't do them anymore.
Tried a couple of trade importers, but once they heard I was non-trade they
ignored me, even tho' I could have bought them through my own company. And
yes, I have made my own using Jals and Anaheims in the past, but sometimes
it's nice just to come home from work and slam some ready-made ones in the
oven....

Cheers, and pray for sunshine!

Gareth

Hi Stewart,

Yes, there are quite a few UK chileheads around now, I'm pleased to say.
You can grow any type of chile you want in the UK, so long as you protect
it from frost. We generally crack our seeds off around March/April time,
and grow them on in pots in the greenhouse, although I have grown chiles
outdoors in soil successfully, particularly jalapenos. In fact, as a
hobby it's got completely out of hand, and we've ended up starting a
business selling chile plants (among other things), locally this year.

The plants will sit happily in pots on your raised deck, so long as you
bring them in for the winter when the weather gets cold. I usually cut my
plants back for the winter, and wait for the spring when they start
putting out new shoots. You get an earlier crop the following year too,
by overwintering, which is great.

Best wishes,
