Well...count me as a wimp.

One season, before the jalapenos lost their heat, I was gifted with a large
quantity of home-growns, and cut up enough to can about 6 pints. For the
next two or three hours, I was running back and forth from the sink,
plunging my poor hands into icy water. (This was before I knew about the
non-helpful properties of water when it comes to dissolving capsaicin, and
how I might have been better off fondling some ice cream!) I had a gig that
night, and didn't know how I was going to manage playing the keyboard with
my hands in that state! Fortunately, shortly after leaving the house, the
pain subsided and life went on as before. (I think the residual fumes in
the house may have helped to keep the burn going.)

And now I wear surgical gloves before cutting up any quantities of chiles.
