You didn't kill it.  The brown is a simple oxidative browning reaction
that is natural and normal.  Take a bite out of an apple and set it down
for a few minutes.  When you come back to it, you'll see it has
browned.  All it has done is 'rusted' (oxidation/reduction- fire in VERY
slow motion ;-)

It isn't bad though it looks like it.
