Based on a true incident just last night:

Once upon a dreary night.
I looked to see what gave a fright.
The startle came at the basement window
I heard a gentle scratching, I thought "the wind" though
At first a gentle scratching, then a more constant scratching.
It sounded as an egg were hatching.
With my flashlight I peered through the glass
But could not see so at last
I made my way outdoors to find
the source and digging in the leaves I found
A helpless mole rooting in the ground.
I thought to help it from the window well
But left it there and so I tell
The next morning upon awaking
I found the frozen mole no longer quaking.
And so in tribute to Lenore,
the pesky mole is nevermore.
