I agree that pH8.0 is way too basic. The only incentive to stray far from neutral as far as I can imagine, would be to allow the uptake of some nutrient (a metal element?) that we don't fully understand. Anyway JohnT does great with his plants at neutral or a little less; so I would go with that.

Some of my rocotos left outside one Fall (Autumn) were half killed at 27degF. The growers in the Peruvian highlands cover their plants if there is risk of frost.

Sorry about my supernatural powers spoiling the Tour de France! The picture I meant was the one of the little Indian boy loading a basket from a pile of cayennes.
