Well, I feel the need to come out of lurkdom as well, since everyone
seems to think New Mexico is comprised of Santa Fe and Albuquerque. I am
located in Las Cruces which is in southern New Mexico. We are distinctly
different in our atmosphere, geography and Mexican food (only in
northern NM will you find rellenos made with poblano chiles, among many
other differences). All of NM is amazingly beautiful, Albuquerque is
definitely the most urban area and all the positives and negatives that
go along with a large (for NM) population. Las Cruces has hit about
80,000 people and we're the 2nd largest city in NM. It's growing way too
fast and although I can't blame people for wanting to move here, I
really wish they wouldn't. All I can hope is that our traffic won't be
as miserable as Santa Fe, but the city planners seem uninterested in
preventing that.
Anyway, who cares about politics? My point is that the Mexican food here
kicks the heck out of the stuff they call Mexican food in Northern NM,
with a few exceptions. I'm not saying you can't get decent Mexican food
up there, but in my opinion we've got the best food right here. Hope
this doesn't start a war with my fellow New Mexicans up in Alb. and SF,
but I think at the least we can all agree that the cuisines vary greatly
from northern to southern NM. I could use a burrito from the Horseman's
Haven right about now, actually.....

Did I mention in chile season you can smell the chile being processed
all over the city? Like the Hershey factory but chile instead of
chocolate. Wish I could bottle it....

best to all of the chile heads!
Sue
