Hello Pod-Heads. I harvested my first batch of green chile today, (about 30 pounds worth) and spent most of the afternoon roasting and preparing them for freezing. Of course I had to cook some green chile burgers on those pod-infused coals. They were to die for! For the past few years, my chiles have been bland and had very little heat. I must have grown the right variety this year (NM Barker), because this crop had a great flavor and decent heat! Living in Kansas with clay soil doesn't make the best conditions for growing NM varieties, but for once in the last several years, I wasn't disappointed with the crop. They aren't Hatch, but getting closer! The jalapenos had a very nice kick too. However, I've seen some jalapeno shapes this year I've never seen before. I have one plant that is producing light green, large bulbous pods. A few others that are producing the familiar dark-green pointed pods, but they seem smaller than normal. And one is producing pods with a shade somewhere between the two above, but the pods almost rounds like cherry pepper. Very strange.
