Took a trip north this week: Monday-Drove up to Albaquerque stopping for a green chile cheeseburger at The Owl in San Antonio. I think it's a toss-up between The Owl and Manny's Buckhorn. Both have great burgers. Shopped at Costco and Trader Joes since we don't have them in Las Cruces. Tuesday: Went to the State Fair where they had finished making the world's longest Ristra. 3250 pounds and 157.5 feet long. Took a ristra making course. Ristras in the Albaquerque area were selling for $10.00 per foot. Wednesday: We drove up to Chimayo and visited a couple of weavers. Saw a couple of signs advertising Chimayo Chiles for sale. Drove back down to Espanola where they were getting ready for an Obama visit on Thursday. Local chiles (probably Chimayo or Espanola Improved) were $35.00 per bushel. Hatch Chile (probably Big Jim) was $15.00 per bushel and $20.00 for a 40 pound sack. We then drove up to Los Alamos, through the National Laboratory and took route 4 through the Jemez mountains. It's about as scenic a drive as any I've taken. Don't stupidly leave your camera in the hotel room:-) A good reason to go back. Thursday: Drove south from ABQ and shopped in Hatch. Bought two beautiful 2 foot Ristras for $10.00 each. The lady we bought them from didn't know what variety they were but said "Caliente". Since they're pretty large, I'm guessing Sandia. Hanging in the morning sun on the front porch as this is being written. This will probably be the last trip north till the Fiery Foods Show in late February. Dave TLCC
