Would not his breathing have been labored along with the itching? WWJD?
(what would Jim do?) Didn't know what an epi-pen was until googled it. An
atropine syrette would have been used in my training (60s).

I think the account Ian posted gave the best info:

More typical ignorance from the press!!

He died from a food allergy, NOT from it being 'too hot'. If he was
allergic to chiles, even a mild one would have killed him (via
anaphylaxis) but then that doesn't sound as sensational.

It wasn't the fact that it was 'hot' that killed him, it was that he was
allergic. The itching is an absolute sign of anaphylactic shock. It's a
shame he died because this is something that is very easily reveresed
when caught at the onset.

Could just as easily from that story, change the headline to "man dies
after girlfriend scratches his back". It'd make about as much sense as
the headline they did use.
