His breathing wouldn't have been 'labored' per se, but you would have heard
whistling as the airway constricted.
This article, while seemingly slightly more accurate as to the details of
the death, is even worse IMHO as it calls eating chiles dangerous.
There ought to be a whole field of dead people after this weekend then
