Several folks have inquired as to the status of the Open Fields Hot
Sauce Contest. After much waffling on my part, and a little prodding
from folks behind the scenes, it is a go. Here are the particulars,
along with the categories. Mailing address below.
Who benefits: ALL proceeds (as in 100%) go to the StepUp Charities.
No administrative costs, no overhead, nothing taken out. Hit
StepUpforCharity.org for more info if needed.
Deadline for entry: They must arrive no later than Friday September
25th, unless you plan on bringing them to the fields yourself...
which is the preferred method :-) I only need one sample per entry &
if you are not attending, you can send it with somebody who is.
Who can enter: ANYBODY. Commercial and amateur will be competing
together. That makes it pretty unfair for the commercial folks,
biased towards the amateurs, but it will mean that much more if by
chance a commercial entry wins.
Fee: $10 per entry/category, made out to "Stair Climb Fund".
Awards: 'Fraid there isn't going to be much past bragging rights,
which is what folks tell me they're only interested in anyway. A
certificate will be presented for 1st, 2nd, & 3rd for each category.
Categories:
Best "Hot"
Best "Mild" (I'll be helping to judge this one) :-)
Best "Sweet Hot
Best "Sweet Mild"
Best "BBQ"
Best "Open" (jams, jellies, chutneys, peanut brittle, those sorts of
things)
Best "Fresh from the Fields"
Rules: There are none! Get the sauces here, mark clearly which
category they are to be entered in, and that's it. Okay- maybe one
rule: I reserve the right to pitch a sauce if it is 'fizzy' or
'fuzzy'. No killin' the volunteer judges! :-)
The gun will sound for the "Fresh from the Fields" at dawn on Saturday
when the picking starts. Turn in is 3 PM Saturday. If you're not
competing, Jeff & I will need help with the tasting and scoring.
