Actually Byron may be on to something here.  The slugs don't like sharp
rough stone chips on the shingles, cut themselves to death if they try to
make the trek to chile land.

Asbestos has been banned for any use for quite some time, but really old
used shingles could have it in them.  If unsure of what you are getting,
most home improvement stores will have "broken bundles" to sell.
