I have a story containing some similarities to yours, which I will refrain
from telling because a) chiles were not involved, and b) the story wasn't
nearly as interesting. The main characters were myself and a small creature
whom I aptly named SmartMouse. SmartMouse and I finally ceased to be
roommates after I installed a state-of-the-art Havaheart trap, which was
the first trap from which he was unable to escape after eating the bait. He
was much smaller and less distinguished in appearance than his work had led
me to imagine. After paying him my respects and wishing him a good life, I
opened the trap door in a nice wooded area not far from a state park and
several older houses which were probably not terribly mouse-proof.

Should you be interested in duplicating my success, you could find a nice
rat-sized Havaheart trap at your local hardware store. You may want to bait
it with Anchos.
