I've come across a couple of references to 'Szechuan peppercorns' as being
blisteringly, mindbogglingly hot things (even by a fellow not-on-the-list
CH), like little red round peppercorns, and apparently not chiles.

The things I've seen called Szechuan peppercorns are the fragrant but
completely unhot prickly-ash berries, which are neatly described at
http://www.fatfree.com/foodweb/food/szechuan-peppercorns.html

What then are these fantastic things that I've been missing out on all my
life?
