One of their bigger problems there isn't so much the use of mono
cropping as much as it is their use of total flooding irrigation.  This
provides a ready made highway for the spread of any diseases and
blights.  Water quickly transports any problem found in one part of the
field to the rest of the field in no short order.  Not a very efficient
means of watering either, but it is very handy for them.
