[CH] Hab-loving ants

Every year, my habs are afflicted by tiny ants which eat holes in the 
peppers and just have a ball running around inside.  I guess they have a 
discriminating sense of taste, because they wait until the peppers are 
ripe--the middle of August here in Virginia.  Is there a chemically 
benign way to ward them off?  I worry about strong chemicals diffusing 
through the pepper skin, in which case even washing won't help.
