Howdy for Texas, folks. Awhile back I posted a message asking what to do
about fungus gnats. I got a lot of responses and they were all appreciated,
but let me tell ya what worked: Tangle Trap. Janie at www.chileplants.com
<http://www.chileplants.com> told me about it. It's a sticky vaseline-like
gel you spread with a putty knife on a piece of cardboard, wood, whatever (I
used yellow construction paper). Place it near the infected plants and
leave it alone. I put four 6"x6" squares straddling across the point where
4 pots came together (I have 2 rows of 6 plants each in 10" pots right up
next to each other) at about 11:30 pm one evening. The next morning, each
had caught one or two gnats. A start, but nothing to get excited about. I
came home at lunch, however, and one had 34 gnats! The other three all had
15-20 gnats. By the next morning there were 43 gnats on one of 'em and the
body count keeps rising, though all the dead gnats are getting kinda gross,
so I'm gonna lay down some new squares this weekend. I got the stuff via
the internet from www.biconet.com <http://www.biconet.com> . They have a
ton of environmentally friendly stuff. Now that that little annoyance has
been brought under control, I can try and figure out this whole pollination
thing. If I have 12 chile plants, all the same variety (habs), all in 10"
pots right up against each other, do I need to do anything special to get
them to bear fruit, other than TLC? Since I've beat the gnats down, we're
not gonna get any pollination from them :). And for next year, if I wanted
to grow 12 different varieties, all in 10" pots right up against each other,
would that work, or will I get a bunch of crazy cross pollinated plants?
There is some airflow from the air conditioner across the plants. I have an
ideal window for growing plants in my house with a good southern view. As
the sun gets lower in the horizon as winter approaches, it just gets sunnier
and sunnier. I built a 6'x3' table just for the chiles and want to grow
different varieties next year. Any info y'all could provide would be
appreciated. Thanks.
