Hello Podlovers-
I wanted to let you Texas (and anyone else who might drop in) CHs know
about a couple of Small Town Cafes worth checking into. No affiliations,
yaddaba, yaddabba yaddabbba.

The first is Casa Cabana in Winters, Texas. (North end of town, east
side of highway 83). They make a " #2 Fajita Taco w/ guacamole" that
is out of this world. When I go there, I order 3 bowls of salsa and 2
#2 's, open the tacos and cover with salsa. Simple but very, very
good. The beef is usually very tender and not fatty. The cook won't
tell me what he flavors it with. :-( When working in the area, I often
get several extra for leftovers. They're even good cold.

The second is Zavala's in Mason, Texas. North end of town, east side of
highway 87. They make a really good Chicken Fajita (a little greasy
sometimes, but delicious). One order with an extra "set up" is plenty
for 2 people. A couple of the waitpersons are CH trained. We tell one
young lady "We don't mind paying for extra salsa--keep it coming."
...and she does. Sometimes they charge extra, usually they don't. They
are open every day until 10:00 pm.

Neither of these establishments is likely to be special otherwise, but I
happen to find these items appealing. I'm sure there are many small
dining places that are worthy of our business but which will never be
discovered. If you happen to like tacos or fajitas and are traveling
through these towns, give them a try.

On another note, I have installed a poor-boy greenhouse (to replace the
storm-destroyed real one) over the Aji portion of the back garden using
greenhouse plastic and 1" PVC with the fence for major support. The 1"
PVC is bent in tension in a rainbow arc, anchored over rods driven into
the ground to create a quansett hut (sp?) structure. My Ajis are 6'-8'
tall with lots of fruit and hundreds of blossoms, so I will try to keep
'em going. Stocked with ladybugs today to keep the aphids down, will
stock garden variety orb weavers this week to trim the whiteflies and
leafhoppers. My Ajis are later than usual because of the dry heat this
summer, but are in overdrive now. Left room for my favorite potted
plants along the tops of the north and east walls (installed shelves on
hinges along top). Since only a dozen or so nights usually get REALLY
cold here in the "winter", I'm hoping it won't take much to heat. Fresh
Ajis for Christmas Dinner--- What could be better?
Enjoy the heat, my friends.
