I had heard this in a different form but honestly don't know
enough about the chemical reactions to understand whether it
falls into the urban myth category or not.  What I heard 
(from someone that used to do pool maintenance) was that 
the chlorine you poured into the pool didn't really smell,
just burned.  When you could "smell chlorine" in a pool, it
meant that it was time to add some more - what you were smelling
was the by-product of the chlorine doing its job. 

No truth content claimed .....
