Re Scott's suggestion that "schmuck" is actually "smuck" (ger. cheap
jewelry).

Throughout my childhood I have heard the word "schmuck" used as an
unflattering reference. A "schmuck" was one of the (unfortunately) large
group of people who "knows not and knows not that they know not". The
language of origin was Yiddish - a delightful and creative tongue that
seems never at a loss for words!
