Coffee grounds can be composted or can be mixed straight into the garden
soil.
I mentioned newspapers.  You can also shred them and use the shredded
stuff for mulch and mixed in compost - worms love it.   Organic
Gardening magazine recommends as much as 6 inches of shredded paper as
mulch.   I bought a very inexpensive paper shredder at Staples which has
been a great bargain.
