I understand that the virus is carried in most tobacco and the best thing
would be to keep all tobacco out of the compost pile, but wouldn't the heat
of the composting process kill any existing virus or is it resistant to the
temperatures reached during composting?

85% of all dried tobacco (i.e., the stuff you might find in cigarettes) is
contaminated with the Tobacco Mosaic Virus (this is according to Rodales).

So ­ you might urge your wife to stop that practice.
