It's true that a number of spices and herbs are fair to good
germicides and preservatives.  Rosemary, for instance, compares well
enough to BHA/BHT that research is in progress to refine an odorless
rosemary extract for use as a commercial food preservative.  None
is quite good enough to eliminate *all* germs in food (though allspice
comes pretty close, I'm told).  But then, I don't think commercial
preservatives make that claim either.
