Sometimes  Nature  just has its own way. (Or her own way)

Carefully nutured seeds fail to sprout even with optimum conditons.

However, "left-overs" tossed into the composter along with a bunch of
vegetable trimmings, etc.  have merrily sprouted and are growing
vigorously in the dark, pushing aside mounds of coffee grounds, potato
peelings, and other stuff.   Since it is nice and warm in there I will
leave them for a few days and see what happens.
