I plant about 50 plants in an 8 x 8 foot garden surrounded by fencing for
support.  It becomes a forest of peppers.  Advantages are that the peppers
use each other for support, there are no weeds to worry about once the
plants get larger since the ground is competely shaded and my yeilds are
very good.  The only disadvantage I have is that it can be very difficult to
reach the plants near the center.
My advice, pack 'em in and let them have a party!
