I used red much last year and weeds grew underneath. I had to pull it up to
weed and put black mulch under it to retard the weeds from growing. Never
noticed a bigger yield but sure did notice more work!
Also don't know if your wicking idea would work or not. I have wick plants
in pots which you have to keep an eye on to make sure its still working, but
I'd try one if I were you and see what happens.
