Here is a mint planting tip I just saw:
Planting Mint
If you love mint in your herb garden, but don't want it to take over, try
this technique. Plant the mint plant in a plastic pot, or a tub with its
bottom removed, and plant the pot in the ground so only the pot lip is
showing. This will help keep it from invading the rest of the garden.

I have tried that and it did not work. Heavy stems fall over and root and
runners went over the edge and took off 5-15 feet away.
